OLD MONUMENTS in CHERNIHiV - Ukraine
Ancient Cathedrals - Kurgan (Tumulus Royal Grave) ...
A day excursion from Kyiv
Built in 1030s, the Saviour Cathedral of Chernihiv is the oldest in Ukraine. In its interior are preserved magnificent original marble columns. Chernihiv is mentioned in 907 in a treaty with Byzantium - it was then a powerful Grand Principality and rival of Kyiv, located some 50 miles south. These were two major centers of civilization were destroyed in 1239 by the Mongol hordes led by Batu Khan. Chernihiv never fully recovered its political clout but did retain its importance as a religious and cultural center. Chernihiv is today a premier site to veiw extraordinary historic monuments, some depicted below.
Emblems of ancient history - roots of European Classic Mythology and IndoEuropean languages are also found in Chernihiv. One of the most popular attraction is the Royal Kurgan called "Black Grave". It is among the largest Tumulus known (125 meters in diameter) and it was one of the first to be excavated (Imperial Russia stripped all the contents to enrich museusm in Russia). There also are underground caves linked to various ancient monasteries, some for men and others for women (once closed by the Bolsheviks). Regarding Mythology and the origin of European languages, note below the crown like head-piece from the local shown below called in Ukrainian xx - its form, name and use restricted to women who faced maternity point toward Kybele or Cybele (Cibele) and Ceres as in cereal - the goddess who governs nature (life) or "Mother Earth" (a topic worth an independent exploration).
The historic beauty found in Chernihiv also makes the town and its stunning cathedrals a favored site for the cellebration of nuptials.
