Ideas realized in ceremonies ... now surviving mostly in words ...
The Christian Church fathers, for centuries, tried to erase popular fondness for celebrations on December the 25th the birth day of Mithra. It is relatively recent that Christmas acquired a religious overtone, as for instance in Christmas - Christ. In Ukrainian Christmas is Rizdvo, and in Spanish Navidad, which point toward "nativity". None of the early Christians of the first centuries after his birth knew his birth day. Nonetheless, the end of the year, its shortest days and longest nights inspired poets and spred fear among others. Much of such is reflected in the word ideas outlined below.
Latin stoic philosophers proposed ...

Once, Christmas festivities were known as SATURNALIA, and its essence has survived efforts to erradicate its pagan elements. To this end, the Vatican moved the Christian celebration of the nativity of Chirst from January 6th to December 25th, the birthday of Mithra, then a part of Saturnalia. Today, as in ancient times, sharing joy, exchanging gifts, and illuminating darkness with lit candles is the essence of Christmas, as it was of Saturnalia. Some sources state that during the pagan festivity, social inequities ceased and all men became equal - often slaves were served by their masters and neither work nor business took place. Northern European barabarians, who already converted to Christianity, invaded and destroyed Rome and introduced their emblem of the pine tree as another embem of Christmas.
As with Saturnalia, Christmas festivities are also a prepartion to welcome a new year or a season of "new beginnings - once represented by the Saturn - Janus pair now remembered as Saturday - January as the days of "new beginnings" - represented by Saturn-Janus and remembered by every "Good day" and "Good Night". January 6th, the date of the "original Christmas" is now Epiphany, and it stands for the notion that it was then that the wise men arrived with their gifts.
Some say SATURN is CRONKOS or Kronos ("Father Time"), often depicted as an old man, bent by age and holding a scythe. CHRONOS and CHRONOLOGIC time is quite different from biologic-genetic time which is cyclic and falls into the domain of CYBELE or KYBELE who now apparently rules the mysteries of CYBERSPACE. Legends state that Saturn was forced by Zeus to become LATENT which prompted him to seek refuge in LATIUM. Up to then, SATURN strived to create what became a wonderful epoch called the golden era of mankind, for it was a time of peace and prosperity ("lions and sheep were companions"). Fables also assert that SATURN was welcomed by JANUS, King of the LATINS and of a land known as SATURNIA that became modern Italy. The task of Saturn was to saturate mortals with the gifts from agriculture, and the task of JANUS was to insure propicious "new beginnings". In this manner, the feast SATRUNALIA and of the NEW YEAR became linked as they are today.
SATURNALIA or "OPTIMUM DIERUM" or OPTIMAL DAYS started either on December 17th or 19th and were followed by celebrations of the birth of MITHRA on December 25th. Modern healers may not be aware that MITHRA is invoked whenever mention is made of the cardiac MITRAL valve. Likewise, whenever a Bishop of the Roman Church dons a MITRE (as the Pope can because he is the Bishop of Rome) - it serves as a reminder that Christianity replaced MITHRAISM. Some sources assert, rather falsely, that JUNO, the daughter of Saturn also known as LUA was loose and dissolute and got LUES or syphilis. Lues in Greek implies "loose or dissolute". Zealot monks, while translating books in Latine, frequently distorted translations to degrade and slander pagan culture and beliefs.
Regarding "new beginnings", JANUARY in Greek was GAMelion, which was a popular month for weddings or "matrimonial beginnings" (perhaps this inspired Gregor Mendel to name fertile cells as "GAMetes"). Likewise, JUNO, who stood as the champion of women, may have inspired the tendency for wedding to take place during JUNE. Furthermore, JUNO stands as a champion of women and their fertility and is most welcome in Rio de JANeiro and its CARNAVAL which has many similarities with the feasts of SATURNALIA.
"Past" and "Future", father Time or Saturn, and "Day and Night" take us into, perhaps, the most complex set of ideas - the nature of "Time". One beginning can be "RIK RIKA", which in Ukrainian link "year" with "river", as if a poet crafted these terms to illustrate that, like water, "time flows", it is never "here" and it never returns - the same is asserted by the adage - tempus fugit (time is a fugitive). Modern societies accept, although hardly understand, the "theory of relativity" and its relationships with "time". Even if humanity can resolve the riddle of the nature of "Universal Time", the riddle of "biologic time" is even more complex, as illustrated by different rates of aging of diverse animals. In Psychological terms, DAY remains a key measure of time. Sensitive people admire the beauty in DAWN or ALBA. Poets created AURORA and speak of her pink fingers arsing from the east to annoucne a new DAY. In medicine AURA speaks of "what is to come", or a "pro dromos". In the roots of "DAY" are included DEI, DEITY, DEUS, DIOS, ZEUS, ZOO, ZOOLOGY ... which brings us back to the circle concerned with life. Many characaterize life as the "Circle or Cycle of Life" and its rhytms as CIRCAdian. Perhaps Shiva makes such abstractions graspable ... standing within a circle of fire or atomic energy, her many hands sooting, harming, and destroying life while her dancing feet crush ignorance ... Shiva may help some of us to better understand Cybernetics and Circadian rhythms, as well as Cybele and Cyberspace.
A more "medical" tangent concerns the ideas in DAY or DIA in Spanish. This constellation includes medical terms such as DIAgnosis, DIAbetes, DIArrhea among other terms implying "pass through" ... and in this sense, APOLLO, as the deity of LIGHT and Medicine, illuminates another cluster reminding healers that among their tasks is to deLIGHT their patients or otherwise express APOLOgies to APOLLO. The idea DIA antedates Greek or Latin - in Indoeuropean DEIW implies that LIGHT and GOD are one. Many propose that only God is the source of true enLIGHTenment, while others sustain that science and medicine must also contribute their share to ilLUMinate and DIAgnose the nature of things. (Lumen in Spanish is LIGHT and fire - in Slavic SVITLO SVIT (light and Universe) point to VIT, VITAL, VITAMINE. There is more poetry in the antithesis of LIGHT or NOLIGHT or NIX or NIGHT or in German NICHT - NACHT for NO and NIGHT or in Ukrainian NICH and NICHOHO for NIGHT and NOTHING ... and not far is NE, NO, NEIN for "no or nothing" and in the proximity is NECROPSY, NECROSIS and NOXA, NOXIOUS ... and nightMARES, which link MARA, the deity of DEATH, with the lack of LIGHT... but there is one glorious exception - Christmas Eve or NOCHE BUENA or "Good Night" ... prudence suggests that exchanges of GOOD NIGHT wishes may help ourselves to awake and welcome Aurora!
