Very few words have a greater inherent importance to Humanity than those reflecting on their identity. Here we confront a common question? - "where were you born" - "where were your parents from" ... 

I will start with "to bring to Light" or in Spanish "alumbramiento", a fetus, if delivered alive, "seeing the light". Also of interest are the notion of "labor" pointing to "torture, tort, contort ... " and religious overtones that humans are born "in sin". In political perspectives, where a fetus sees the light determines his "nativity" or where is he a "native", a requirement to be a full citizen and if there is a government, his "nationality" ... and if there is no government, his "ethnicity", a soft way to denote "tribe". Going further, some infants are "legitimate" and others are "natural" of generated by "royals" in palaces or a "bastard" if generate in a barn. All and more of such notions are rooted in older perspectives. In Europe, it was Leto, impregnanted by Zeus, who had to be hidden on the island of Delos under the cover of fog and protection by Zeus. Her "labor" took place on a leto or lecho in Spanish and in English a stretcher with adamantine (diamond) legs. Leto's delivery of her "litter", the twins Artemis (Diana) and Apollo, was aided by Letona (Lucy, Lucila pointing to Luz or light in Spanish), a goddess charged to help women to "deliver". The constellations of Leto, Letona, litter, detritus, dirt or brood (dirt in Ukrainian), light, delight, lux, luxury, luster and luxury are inescapable - and too complex to fully explore here. Suffice is to say that it was on Delos where a Dolphin was mounted by Apollo to be taken to Delphos ... and presently Philadelphia would like to be seen as an emblem of "brotherly love".

A collateral trail touches upon OBSTacles that impede the TRIP or TRABA in Spanish, the TRANsit of the fetus toward the light. OBSTetrics has the mission to remove OBSTacles to birth and minimize the TORTure of TORTuous labors and eventually legal claims sustained by TORT laws. In general, the best TRABAJO (work in Spanish) results from lack of TRABAS (obstacles). 

None of you have heard of "native" metabolism or "inborn citizens" but most of you heard of "native citizens" and "inborn birth defects" - an interesting inconsistent preference of synonyms. In any case, European and Jews refuse to recognize that they are not "true" "natives" of the lands they inhabit.

In Latin, PREGNASCI, NASCI, NATALIS, NATUS, NATIONALIS, NATIVUS, INNASCI, RENASCI, DENASCI point toward pregnancy, nascent, natality, neonate, nationality, native, innate, renaissance, and denaturalize. The connection with NATURE and NATURAL is obvious. In medicine, "natural", in simplistic terms, implies lack of manipulation or ADULTeration by human ADULTs. "Natural" birth implies a process without interventions by PARTERAS (midwife in Spanish) or others - the link PARTO (birth) with dePART, PORT, TRANSPORT is obvious.   

NATIVITY engenders neoNATES or new NATIVES and is a fountain for political dogmas such as NATIVISM. "Conservative" political parties love to sing songs promoting "nativists" promisses and to hide "native" corruption by blaming "immigrants". One ideal in America in the broadest sense of "new world" was to replace the doctrine of "lex sanguinis", a basis of legal rights for natives above those of "foreigners" with "lex solis" declaring that all those born in America were equal regardless of their ethnicity. "Lex sanguinis" defined Israel, and "Lex solis" defines all the republics of the New World.   

The poetic notions inherent in "birth" are wide - BIRTH and BERTH point to BHRAME, BHRITI, BRAT, and BRAK which in Sanskrit and Ukrainian mean to bear, birth, coming to life, brother, and marriage.

PARTURITION and PARITY also refer to birth. Returning to Spanish PARTO, PARTIR, PARTE and PARIENTE, these term expand the links of PARTurition with dePART, PART, PARent and close relatives - it underscores that a child is "a PART of a PARenT". It is apPARENT that a PARenT is like an author, a source or origin of creation or creature. In Latin PARERE or PARENTIS means deliverer, and the same is evident in Ukraine but ... linguistic emphasis on sound and letters obscures the universality of the poetry of meanings. In Ukrainian RODY, RODYTEL, ROD, RODYVO, URODA, RODOVID, RODOM, RODEN, RODYNA and NAROD link the ideas of birth with parent, parturition, labor, beauty, genealogy, descent, element, relatives and people.

If you like a taste of old stories than know that Zeus ordered LUCinda to help LETO, (LATONA) in her labor and delivery. Leto by being pregnant by Zeus, was cursed HERA, his spouse who decreed that she could not deliver wherever the sun could shine. To help Leto, Zeus asked Poseidon to anchor a floating island known as Ortygia on four aDAMANTine  pillars as strong as DIAMONDS. Then, Zeus asked Boreas to blow a storm to raise a curtain of sea water to shade the island from the sun - this is how Leto found a BERTH or litter to give BIRTH with the help of LUCINDA (or DELIA).

LETO delivered the twins Artemis and Apollo, also called Lykios, Phoebos, Clarius or Helios, all names linked with notions of light and illumination. LUCinda also links with light or LUX as in LUCubrate or meditate a term used to "shed light on obscure subjects". In the case of unwanted CONCEPtions, the LUCubrum or hard work of many, has failed to diminish their frequency and impact on demands for abortion.

ARTEMIS, having seen how much her mother Leto suffered during the childbirth of APOLLO (Leto was the first born twin), developed a phobia to childbirth. For the rest of her existence, Artemis (roman Diana) struggled to remain PARTHENOS or a virgin. Some mortal virgins with less resolve than Artemis have, at times, tried to explain their unplanned pregnancies as PARTHENOGENETIC.

From LETO we also get LOCHIA, a term denoting the usual vaginal discharge that follows a delivery. We also get the Latin words LECTUS, LECTULUS, LECTICA, LETTO for couch, settee and cot or bed - LETTO, LECHO, LISHKO denote bed in Italian, Spanish, and Ukrainian. These terms also evoke "dirtier" notions as in LITTER and BROOD, which in English and Ukrainian stand for DIRT.
