The medical vistas of LABOR impinge on motherhood and are explored elsewhere. Here it suffices to note that the task or trade of OSBSTetricians is not to be OBSTinate but to help women in labor by removing OBSTacles to parturition. The same stress on TOIL or removal of roadblocks is found in Spanish given as TRABA and TRABAjo for obstacle and work.

TRADE and TRABAJO extend toward TRIPaliare, TRIPaty, TRUDno, TRUD, which in Latin, Ukrainian and Spanish stand for work, TOIL or crushing hard labor, difficulty and implicitly also include ideas of TORT, CONTORT, TORTURE, linking work with forced labor. 

LABi links LABOR with LABile and LAPsus which extends to proLAPSE and coLLAPSE as if to point out that hard work can be detrimental to health.

WORK, werg or WERK in German should remind scientists that not all work can be reduced to ERG and enERGy. Biologic studies show that mental work or "cerebration" does not increase the consumption of calories.

ROB is perhaps the most provocative in the cluster of ideas about LABOR. ROBOT from ROB, RAB, ROBOTa, RABOTa, RABUvaty in Ukrainian and Russian point to ROBBERY and TOIL, SERF, SLAVE, and PILLAGE. The poor become slaves or RAB or SERF, when masters ROB then from the rewards of their ROBOTA or work. The reaction of RABOTeurs or ROBOTniki or workers in French and Ukrainian against ROBOT machines and ROBBERY by machinations by profiteering exploiting global corporations inflame LABOR unions and politics - more so since the advent of Karl Marx and Marxism.

The "rights" of labor, such as "shipwrights" among other types of unions of skilled workers continue to be undermined ... recently particularly by ROBOT machines who can perform the ROBOTA of many RABOTeurs or workers. The link of RAB or slave with ROB and ROBBERY may have a poetic poignancy since the toil of laborers, or so it seems, is failing to benefit them - the rewards of work seem to continue to benefit fewer and fewer classes of people. Of current issue is the new mantra "to large to fail" - the idea is for the public to pay private speculators for their failures while holiding that profits are private thus depriving the public from benefits. For those who may doubt the justice of such corporate thinking, such ideologyh is adorned with mantras such as "compassionate conservatism" - since 2007, the economic depression seems to point out that neither "conservative" nor "compassionate" match the realities of the decline of the economic power of the nation. Perhaps to remedy such, another mantra is emerging - the promotion of a "Tea Party" to inflame and divert attention toward divisive emotional issues stressing a dogmatic opposition to "rights" concerning "health, gay marriage, immigrants... along with older and recurring themes of guns and creeping socialism ...". Underscoring such an effort financed by secret corporate donations is an effort to turn the working class against labor rights.

In earlier times - before May 1st became the international "labor day", in Rome, the occasion was called "Floralia", a feast in honor of "Flora". 

The festival for FLORA started on April 28th and lasted for six day. Named "Floralia" to honer Flora, it was a Spring festivity or "Primavera". In fact, the whole month of APRil was dedicated to Flora - it was then when flowers "opened" or "APeRire" in Latin. It was also then that birds started to sing love songs, beckoning the end of sterile winter and the return of Persephone from Hades or Hell, a signal that the fertility of Gea or Earth Mother was restored.

After "socialist" and labor organizations met at the second Socialist International Congress held in Paris in 1889, Floralia became "labor day". Soon after, every industrial country except United States and Canada celebrated Labor Day.

In 1894 the United States Congress decreed a legal "Labor Day" holiday to be celebrated every first Monday of September and the festivity expanded from a purely "labor" celebration to a celebration by all.
