HAPPY NEW YEAR SALUTATION
Best wishes from Saturn Janus and Juno
Greetings from Aesculapius Hygeia Panacea and Fortuna
We wish you Happy New Beginnings (Peace Health Happiness and Fortune)
For Romans, the summit or zenith of each year was a week-long SATRUNalia festivity ending December 24th. December 25th was (is) the birthday of Mithra. With the advent of Christianity emerged religious phanaticism. The Christian clergy made every effort to destroy pagan traditions and along with such efforts destroyed civilization. When eradication failed, the next option was to "Christianize" festivities now persisting as "Christmas" and "Carnival" or Mardi Gras, among others. Christmas, or Navidad in Spanish, is the emblem of the Nativity (Nacer in Spanish is to be born) of Christ - followed by the "New Year" which points to Saturn (Saturnalia) mentioned above.
The last day of DECEMBER closes an ANNUAL yearly CHRONOLOGY or CALENDar or cycle. The first day of JANUARY opens a new CALENDar with JOVIAL celebrations to JOVE and dedicated to JANUS and SATURN.
Mythology holds that as Chronos was escaping a prophecy of doom, he became LATENT among LATIN people and strived to SATURate them with abundance. This is how Chronos acquired the name SATURn.
SATURN was welcomed to LATIUM by JANUS and JANA who were the custodians of the universe. Ovid said: "Everything depends on the Beginning". Since then, Europeans uphold the tradition that events during January 1st set a pattern for the remainder of the year. "Happy New Year (day)" is now the customary "good day" salutation.
In this spirit, the effigy of JANUs stood at doorways and entrances and was invoked each morning before prayers were said to other Gods. Today, politeness calls for a matutine salutation such as "good morning" or "good day" as a prelude to any discourse.
During peace, the doors of the temple of JANUS or IANUA (the Roman Treasury) were closed. During war, the gates were kept open (perhaps, the Romans knew well the unpredictable nature and costs of war).
The link of endings with beginnings is implied by the Saturn-Janus pair. Artists represented them as bifrons figures, one face was that of Rex Sacrorum or Janus and the other of Saturn, Eon, or Chronos. One looked forward - the other gazed at the past. Many fine artists depict Saturn with a Scythe to stress his link with ripened grains ready for harvest. In a manner of speaking, one represents "hind-sight" and the other, "fore-sight". Whether called "Father Time", Chronos, or Saturn, the cycles of nature and their links with time are conveyed by these deities without simplifying the exceedingly complex nature of time.
Springing life, ripening harvests, and cycling stars gave rise to magnificent poetry and fine arts seeking to encapsulate the essence of TIME. In another overview are shown landscapes related to chronology, chronic, ileus, iliac, and other terms often used in medicine.
