Johann Overbeck belonged to a brotherhood of artists living in Rome who were mostly German speakers and called "Nazarines" (from Nazareth) - perhaps, the composition is a wish for a greater German-Italian empathy. The model is Vittoria Caldoni. Comments about both are found in a companion image. The "Nazarine" painters rejected the style of Raphael and aimed at reintroducing the preceding style, thus their categorization as "Pre-Raphaelites".
