In 1855, Exploring a map to find a location was not much different then as now. This sort of paintings (the image shows a partial view of the original painting) were aimed at the middle class and to be apolitical. The scenario is somewhere in Swabia - a region in South-West of modern Germany. The area was populated by Alemanni tribes. In Spanish, Germans are called "Alemanes".
NB. In Germany in 1855 apparently it was safe for women to travel alone.
