"Bildnis der Sangerin Isabella Colbran" (see details A | B) (see related A | B | C | D), um 1830 Ferdinand Georg Waldmuller (1793 ‐ 1865) Neue Pinakothek, Munich, Bavaria, Germany
Songstress (a famous coloratura soprano) at a pianoforte (grand piano). Note the musical score that illustrates that she was also a musical composer.
Born in Madrid, she became a "Diva Absoluta" by the age of 20 years. Isabella Colbran (1785-1845) met Giachino (Giacomo) Antonio Rossini (1792-1868) in 1815. Isabella left her lover Domenico Barbaia (manager of the Naples Opera) and started a love affair and musical partnership with Rossini, who among other opera roles for her, included her in the role of Desdemona in his opera Otello. Not only are the 39 operas composed by Rossini popular to this day but so are the compositions by the Signora Isabella Colbran Rossini (recordings are easy to find).
N.B. a. (Ed.) Isabelle and Giachino married in 1822. They separated in 1837 and it is reported that Giachino continued helping Isabelle financially (her voice deteriorated by 1824).
N.B. b. (Ed.) In contrast to Rome, which after the advent of Christianity decayed to the extent that it became a small poor village, Naples grew into a leading cultural center of Europe. The importance of Naples as a musical center, as illustrated by the above, persisted after the fall of the Bourbons, Napoleon, etc.
