VIEW OF ASSISI
"Blick auf Assisi - View of Assisi", um 1830 / 35 Carl Blechen (1798 - 1840) Neue Pinakothek, Munich, Bavaria, Germany
Assisi (Asisium in Latin) is a commune in Umbria, Italy and the birth place of St. Francis who founded the Franciscan religious order in 1208. The Roman remains include the Temple of Minerva incorporated into the Santa Maria sopra Minerva Church (a similar Christian Church squatting over a Roman Temple is found in Rome). It is fortunate that the frontis of the church preserved the original Roman architecture (including 5 elegant columns - please see related images).
