"Adonis", 1808 / 32 Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770 - 1844) Neue Pinakothek, Munich, Bavaria, Germany
This sculptor produced statues of soft and smooth character in a "neo-classic heroic" style (hard to say if such approach is a form of plagiarism of ancient impeccable works by sculptors of Ancient Greece. Thorvaldsen imitated and became the successor of Antonio Canova. The great success of both enhanced the public and political appreciation and respect for ancient Greek-Roman art. Thorvaldsen openly asserted that to be a great sculptor it was essential to imitate classical art pieces. This "piece" was commissioned by Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria.
In classic mythology, Adonis was the prototype of youthful masculine beauty combined with "desire" (not so much). Venus tried to seduce him but Adonis chose to go hunting which cost him his life. N.B. The "phenotype" and "morphology" of Adonis is not very masculine (the juvenile scrotum - penis morphology may reflect the prevailing social demands upon artists but such imposition is unlikely to explain the contour over the muscles of the muslo (thigh)which are rather feminine as also are the arms. The notions inherent to mus, masculine ... are exposed in see> word "muscle".
