"Napoleon I Bonaparte (1769-1821)" (see related A | B | C | D | E | F), 1808 Giacomo Spalla (1775 - 1834) Neue Pinakothek, Munich, Bavaria, Germany
This manner of depicting the Emperor of the French is as sympathetic as possible - it also represents a mode of propaganda (advertisement). A list of allegories for which Napoleon stands is too vast to address here - suffices to say that one approach is to notice his "nicknames", from "The Devil's Favourite" to "The Man of Destiny". The British hate for "things French" and Napoleonic overtones are at the root why the "Anglos" persist in refusing to adopt the metric system adopted in 1799 in France. (Napoleon was a member of the "Academie Francaise and Acedemie des Sciences").
