Winckelmann considers this sarcophagus to be among the most ancient and elaborate quality to be an example of the start of decadence of art between the 2nd and 3rd century AD. This decadence coincides with Christian social dominance. The theme is Amazonomachy, a theme quite popular for centuries. The work is dated as having been made around the middle of the 2nd century AD.
