ALCOHOL INTOXICATION (NARCOTIC) - FROM DRUNK TO SLEEP (NARCOSIS)
"Carting a Drunk" (details from "Carting a Drunk") Kostiantyn Trutovsky (1826-1893) National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine
In the villages of Ukraine, access to alcohol often was monopolized by a special shop or "korchma" (canteen). Often these shops were also "Lombard" or pawn shop, as well as sources of money lending. A Christian prohibition on profiting from money lending limited participation by Ukrainians. License for these outlets were often held by Jews, who in villages had no lands, nor many other alternative employment options. Apparently, "korchmas" were a focus that stimulated antisemitism and "pogroms".
