OPINION:
The policies of Dr. A. Merkel were a continuation of those of Kohl and Schreder - they are now manifested by Mr. Putin's brutal war on Ukraine to commit a holocaust of an emerging veritable democracy in Eastern Europe. Apparently, the UBER and DEUTSCHLAND credo persists and allows Germany to obstruct assistance to Ukraine and protect the financial interests of big corporations reaping profits in Russia.
The Premier of Germany, instead of weapons, offered Ukraine 5000 helmets - he furthermore demanded that Ukrainians had to come to Germany to collect them - Germany did not wish to "upset" Mr. Putin. In any case, this example is enough to demonstrate that Germans have failed to learn what WWII and Hitler mean to the rest of the world.
ADDENDUM -June 30, 2022 - Ms. Merkel is no longer premier and regardless of the war crimes Russians commit in Ukraine, she refuses to admit that her policies fostered the Russian attack on Ukraine. She is now in Washington "to conduct political conversations" and among the first she met with is the former President B. Obama - she can claim credit to have convinced him to let Putin get way with his attack, invasion, and incorporation of Crimea to Russia and his fostering an ongoing armed conflict in eastern Ukraine since. And even now, Merkel stands on her notion that appeasing Putin was worth it. Obama did his part by letting Putin "get away" with "stealing by force, Crimea". Merkel-Obama, can stand as to champions of naiveite if not plain stupidity.
And it is not just Merkel - her successor follows the same line - he does not wish to contradict US policy nor other members of NATO - for this he makes speeches and delivers empty empathies and bombastic promises while in fact, he personally places blocks to insure that promised weapons are not delivered or at least delivered late and in minuscules dribbles as Ukrainian soldiers perish trying to repel Russian troops. Seems that Germans and Germany are not ready to grasp that if Ukraine perishes so will many other European democracies.
