MALE FEMENIZATION or FEMALE MASCULINIZATION
"Pothos, from and original by Scopos" (see related A), 340 BC Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy
The body proportions suggest a feminized male (see related image and comments).
Classic mythology suggests a relationship of Pothos to male homosexuality. Pothos (as in potable) is an emblem of a server of wine and of sexual yearning. In clay vessels and sculptures Pothos is frequently depicted with prominent buttocks (as illustrated here) - such suggests that the ancients viewed feminine-like buttocks as erotic - in the retinue of Aphrodite, Pothos stands for "Desire" to whom nothing is denied - he belongs to the Erotes (winged gods of love and sex). Erotes in Rome became Cupids and Psyches - Pothos often wins the support of Peitho (Persuation) and Harmonia (Harmony) - other Erotes are Anteros (love corresponded), Himeros (passion) - note hymen - Hymenaios (related to brides), Hermaphroditus (effeminate male).
