FACES - FACIES - "BIRTH DEFECTS"
"Panel of Facial casts of Nias islanders (near Sumatra, Indonesia) " (see details), 1910 Rijks Museum of Art, Amsterdam , Netherlands
Clearly, each of these facial mold masks have shared and unique personal facial features. Surely you would say that these faces are "Asian". But I doubt you could list what are the specific signs for you to think so. I also suspect that you will agree that each face is distinct - that is how you recognize particular individuals - but what is a "generic" "Asian" face? combined with awareness what are the particular facial features. The curators labeled these masks as representing "Malaysians" - is that because their "malar" bone (cheek bone) is prominent? Think! And there is more - two of the individuals have a "birth defect" - the museum curators demonstrate unconsciously an anomaly that is more prevalent among natives of Malaysia. NOTE in the companion page illustrates more clearly the "birth defect" and medical name.
