The Altar was dedicated to the Roman Emperor Augustus - it is a masterpiece - it was discovered in 1568 and various of the relief plaques became dispersed - efforts by Benito Mussolini regime led to its reconstruction and re-dedication on September 18, 1938. Shown in exquisite detail is a cortege led by Augustus surrounded by his family (please see related images).
