DANCING MAENADS
"Relief with Dancing Maenads" (see related A), 55 - Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy
This theme of dancing Maenads inspired about fifty marble replicas produced during the Roman era, all of them stemming from the late 5th century BC prototype attributed to a sculptor of the school of Callimachus. It has been suggested that the original was intended to adorn a monument erected in Athens in 406 BC to celebrate the victory of Euripides work "Bacchants" played in many theatrical competitions. This relief, which very accurately reproduces three of the six Maenads on the Athenian original, may be attributed to a neo-Attic workshop. The finished work was extensively decorated with gold leaf (used for the female figures hair, jewellery, and thyrsus).
