EASTER EGGS - PYSANKY
"Highly decorated Easter Eggs or "Pysanky" in Ukrainian style"
Easter egg is a symbol of new life, resurrection, spring, having thus become associated with celebration of Easter.
The name "pysanka" derives from a Ukrainian verb "pysaty", which means "to write". Christian tradition in many countries involves dying Easter eggs with solid colors, whereas Ukrainian Easter eggs display complex geometric and floral designs. Furthermore, each ornament or color has its own symbolic meaning.
A unique collection of over 12 000 Easter eggs from around Ukraine and worldwide are gathered in Pysanka Museum in Kolomyya, Ivano-Frankivsk region, founded in 1987.
