Perhaps, the combination of nipple and ring reflect the fact that she was already pregnant and about to have a child from King Henry IV of France (a boy that became Cesar de Vendome). Historians suggest that Gabrielle died in 1599 from complications of eclampsia, but ... if she did deliver a living son and, presumably, expelled the placenta, the eclampsia should have ameliorated.
