ADULT DIONYSUS - FREQUENT REPRESENTATION

"Statue of Dionysus wearing an ivy wreath or Sardanapalos type" (see related A), 509 B.C. British Museum, London, UK

Pentelic marble, Roman copy from Greek original of c. 509 B.C., said to be from Posilippo, near Naples. This heavily draped statue of the wine-god Dionysus is one of a number of Roman copies ... based on a lost Greek original ... with the name Sardanapalos ... mythical Assyrian king notorious for his decadent behaviour ...
The "decadent" branding is suspicious - in the sense that Dionysus did not stand for degradation.
