THE BIRTH OF VENUS
"The Birth of Venus (painting)" (see details A | B | C | D) (see related A), 1485 Alessandro Filipepi (known as Botticelli) (1445 - 1510) Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy
This painting was commissioned by Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de Medici, a cousin of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The theme was probably suggested by the poem Politian and depicts the goddess Venus (Aphrodite) born from frothy sea (the winds were blowing from Africa), landing on Cyprus. Blown by the breath (spirit or soul) of Zephyrus and Chloris, she stands naked on half of a shell and is brought to a golden shore, where the Hour of Springtime welcomes her with a floral mantle. (from the companion label introducing this world-famous work of art)
