The comments (cura as in curator) by Vittorio Sgarbi are of interest and fully shown on a related image. Sgarbi points out details about the single (monolite) block of pure white marble (30 tons); to carving solely with a scalpel; about the contemporary artist (apparently, a local gentleman-farmer) imbued in the artistic heritage of Florence.

The portrayal is inspired by the love of David and Jonathan. The homoerotic, or homosexual, nature of this Biblical legend was, and is, a fertile ground for endless discussions that have little to do with biologic facts. It is of interest that in 2 Samuel 1:23-27 there is a lament expressed by David about Jonathan - "Your love to me was more wonderful than the love of women".

Homosexuality has existed since recorded history. Hermes, Hermaphrodite, Hadrian, and countless other human intellectuals and artists were branded as homosexuals. Those who are phobic to such notions should never listen to the music composed by Pyotr Illich Tchaikovsky or look at images by Leonardo or Michelangelo.
