The unsurpassed building quality of Roman roads and bridges insured their survival and use to this day. A contributing factor protecting such works is, probably, their usefulness and lack of decorative valuable materials, as those used in the construction of temples and palaces.

There is a provocative similitude linking way, street, and via with stone; camino and kamin, which denoted a road or way and stone, are found in Spanish and Ukrainian respectively.
