"The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Jan Deijman" (see details), 1656 van Rijn Rembrandt (1606-1669) Amsterdam Historic Museum, Netherlands
This "second lesson" is a fragment of a larger canvas destroyed by fire. Dr. Deijman is performing an autopsy on a dead man's brain. The assistant is holding a "cup" like "cap" or the "caput", or calvarium, or top of the skull.
The illustrated procedure is like "scalping" - the scalp skin points toward the term "scalpel" or surgical knife.
