L'ENVEMENT (RISING) of PSYCHE
"L'enlevement de Psyche" (see related A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H) Pierre-Paul Prudhon (1758-1823) Louvre Museum, Paris, France
Eros pleaded with Zeus to grant Psyche immortalty, perhaps, an allegory to stress that true love is eternal. Prudhon forgot to show the wings of Psyche - without this, his depiction is more erotic than emblematic of love. See related image "B".
Ancient statues (paintings and murals rarely survive) portray Psyche with wings of a butterfly to underscore her beauty and delicacy. Psyche is the only cure for lust, represented by Eros, who was mentally ill from anexis of lust (eroticism). When he fell in love with Psyche, he was cured.
