"Marie Antoinette (1754-1793) or Archduchess Marie Antoinette Habsburg-Lothringen at the Spinnet " (see related A) Franz Xavier Wagenschon (known as Xaver) Musikinstrumente Meuseum, Vienna, Austria
She was the 15th child of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria (1708-1780) and wife of Louis XVI of France (1754-1793).
Clinicians may be interested in the fertility of Maria Theresa - she was 46 years old when Maria Antonia was born, and she was followed by a brother Maximilian Frances. When Maria Antonia was to become queen of France, she became Marie Antoinette.
Empress Maria Christina was disturbed by the high rates of infant mortality in her domains. She established the Vienna General Hospital and decreed that autopsies would be mandatory for all hospital deaths in the city of Graz (still in effect today). She also "vaccinated" her children against smallpox probably because of the "lesson learned" when she contracted smallpox in 1767 - survived while her daughter Maria Josepha did not - her action influenced public attitudes in favor of smallpox inoculations.
