"Mildly bifid nasal tip, deep philtrum (filtrum) of the upper lip plus questionable prominent lower lip and chin (Habsburg or Hapsburg lip and prognathia)" (details from "Kaiser Maximilian I") (see related A), 1519 Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) Kunshistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria

Consonant with other paintings by Durer, this is also an extraordinary accurate representation of nasal cartilages of Maximillian, who also has a protruding lower lip, an overgrown mandible or jaw and chin, giving rise to prognathia, and an underbite. This image also illustrates component nasal cartilages described much later by embryologists. Note that other artists who painted portraits of this powerful Emperor were either afraid, unable, or seeking favors by minimizing his obvious facies characteristic of many members of the Habsburg family (H+).

Regarding the nose, it is evident that the spine is prominent and thin, bifid at its end and no such overgrowth of the wings or lateral nasal cartilages. These nasal signs are commonly concurrent with the alterations of the jaw. Also note the slanted (down) palpebral fissures and eversion (ectropion) of the outer lower eyelid (better seen in other portraits of H+ Habsburg trait).
