"Maria Tudor (Queen of England and second spouse of Phillip II)", 1554 Antonio Moro (known as Anthonis Moor van Dashort ) (1517-1576) El Prado Museum, Madrid, Spain
Daughter of Henry VIII and Catalina (Catherine) of Aragon, she was proclaimed Queen of England in 1553. This painting, in which she holds the red rose of the Tudor house, was made in England. She was known as "Bloody Mary", because she had almost 300 opponents to Catholicism burned at the stake during the Marian Persecutions. Her reestablishement of Roman Catholicism was reversed by her half-sister Elizabeth I. Her consort Philip, later Philip II of Spain, admired her, but some stories report that he felt "no carnal love for her".
The influence of the style of painting by Moro is evident in the paintings by Velazquez.
Clinicians may be interested in reports that Mary experienced two "phanthom" pregnancies. Some have suggested that she may have had a pituitary tumor - she lactated, lost her vision, and died at the age of 42 years.
