"Calypso ", 1906 George Hitchcock (1850-1913) Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis , Indiana , USA

Calypso was a charming sea nymph who saved and seduced Odysseus. Christians like to call her a witch rather than bewitching. Homer presents her as charming and such that could mesmerize most mortals with her glamour. She viewed most men as piggish and metamorphosed them into pigs. Hermes, who probably was a hermaphrodite, helped Odysseus to deserve Calypso's love.
