× UKRAINIAN CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS |
detail from - ALMS for MENDICANTS - A BEGGAR CHILD perhaps drinking BEER
"Hunger during Childhood " (details from "Distribution of Bread at the Almoner's House") (see related A | B | C), 1627 Historische Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands
See notes in companion images.
Hunger and malnutrition stunt physical and mental growth. Bread, as a main component of a human diet, is an insufficient source of essential micro-nutrients and trace minerals and in particular folates. The jug next to this child probably is meant to convey the notion that in those times the served drink was a mild type of beer. ALCOHOL was considered a nutrient and shared with CHILDREN.
