"Distribution of Bread at the Almoner's House" (see details A | B | C | D), 1627 Historische Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands
A group of individuals and children that could be called "misers", that is victims of misery and miserable living conditions including starvation and medical disorders (see companion images).
"The city set up the Almoners House in 1613 to provide support for the beggars, orphans and foundlings, who received no aid from other charities. This painting depicts the distribution of bread by governors of the Almoners House. People who were registered with the almoners received assistance in kind. The almoners also organized homes for foundlings and for orphans, who were unable to find anywhere else. Beggars who were caught on the streets by the provost were set to work beating hemp" (from the official label).
