PATRIOTISM PATERNITY PATRIMONY TERROR WAR HONOR JUSTICE GLORY PARADISE
"Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori."
(It is sweet and proper to die for your country)
attr. to Homer
N.B. Homer was not a soldier. A cynic may stress that those who advocate "patriotism" often stay at home and sell supplies to armies. Poets nurture ideals of Honor, Justice, Glory and even Promises of a visit to Paradise for those willing to perish protecting the "Patria" or "home country". Cynics again may point out that wars are about stealing or protecting the "Patrimony" of nations. The notion that countries have "fathers" helps the creation of an elite and "Patriotism" often becomes a cliche aimed at "the masses" to blind them as Homer tries - such efforts aim to rob the populus not only of their liberty but also of their national "patrimony".
