WHAT IS REAL?
"Nothing is (as) unreal as realism.
Details are confusing.
It is only by selection,
by emphasis,
that we get at the real meaning of things."
Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (1887-1986)
American artist, creator of abstract images. Alfred Stieglitz, his 291 gallery, and his photographs of her shaped her life. Stieglitz said that her drawings were the "purest, finest, sincerest ... "; they fell deeply in love and married. His nudes of Georgia were called by some as erotic and her abstract images were slandered as "vaginal" in nature. Such defamatory reactions may have induced Georgia away from abstract work and toward more realistic depictions of nature. She was at the side of Steiglitz when he died in New York. Georgia took his ashes to New Mexico to be buried at the foot of a tall pine where she remained for the rest of her life.
