The domes of Ukrainian churches are distinct from those imposed by the Russian Empire shaped like great onions. Russian imperialism is manifested in many Ukrainian churches, whose original cupulas were replaced by "onion-like" Muscovite style cupulas. For example, the cupulas of Saint Sophia in Kyiv, one of the oldest cathedral in Eastern Europe, were replaced by onion-like cupulas - an assertion of Muscovite dominance and cultural imperialism.
