The Cupid's upper lip contour is his bow. As the Archer of Venus he wounded hearts with love and today with blowing kisses. Clergies tried and failed to erase him from human memory, so they invented Saint Valentine who never was.
Much later clinicians realized that a flat upper lip lacking the bow and above it the philtrum often was a message that the mother may have damaged her baby by imbibing alcohol while pregnant.
