RHINOPHYMA
"Retrato de anciano (Portrait of an elder)" (see related A | B | C | D | E | F) Joos van Cleve El Prado Museum, Madrid, Spain
Van Cleve, during the period 1428 -1535, gained great reputation for his portraits.
Rhinophyma is a thickening of nasal skin associated with enlarged oil (sebaceous) glands. These alterations are also manifested by reddening of the skin (telangiectasia) as well as bluishness (venulectasia). Men are at a higher risk, as are those of advancing age. The current understanding is that the enlarged deformed nose, as depicted here, is the result of granulomatous reactions to untreated "rosasea", a disorder poorly understood. One mystery is how alcohol may relate to its cause. What is clear is that rhinophyma impacts preferably older men.
