ACHONDROPLASIA CHILDREN

"Don Baltasar Carlos and His Dwarf", 1631 Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660) Fine Arts Museum, Boston, Massachusetts , USA

The central figure is the 18 months old Don Baltasar Carlos, the eldest son of Philip IV and Elizabeth of France. The "dwarf" has features of achondroplasia (a prominent forehead and flat nasal bridge or "saddle nose"). A rattle and an apple are presumed to be emblems of a scepter and the orb.
